A tour we think you'll love
1) Visit A Glowing Bay In Puerto Rico
Did you know that Puerto Rico is home to three bioluminescent bays: Mosquito Bay, La Parguera Bay, and Laguna Grande? While all are bright and beautiful, Laguna Grande is the most popular bay for day trips because it’s the most accessible from San Juan. You can reach it by car from northeast or central Puerto Rico, unlike the other bays that require island hopping or long drives to the southwest coast.
Located about an hour from San Juan in Fajardo, Laguna Grande is a breathtaking bioluminescent bay filled with tiny glowing organisms called dinoflagellates. With an experienced guide, visitors can have the experience of a lifetime as they glide over the bay to absorb the tranquility of the beauty that surrounds them under a starlit sky.
Since 1997, we’ve been the premier outfitter and provider of bay and lagoon tours at Laguna Grande. Book an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime when you choose one of our tour options:
-
Bioluminescent Bay Night Kayak Adventure – During this guided night kayak excursion, you’ll paddle through waters glowing with bioluminescent organisms under the guidance of a local expert. This experience is perfect for both beginners and experienced kayakers. Our kayaks launch from Las Croabas Harbor to begin your guided kayak tour through a mangrove-lined channel that merges with Laguna Grande.
-
Full Moon Kayak Adventure – While the bay’s bioluminescence is best experienced on a dark, moonless night, we even offer guests an unforgettable excursion when the moon is full. Developed specifically for enjoyment when moonlight reflects off the lagoon, this tour showcases the bay’s mangrove forests, bird life, iguanas, an old lighthouse, and many more wonders contained within eight awe-inspiring ecosystems.
-
Walking Tours – In addition to offering the best kayaking experience on Laguna Grande, we also offer the opportunity to visit Puerto Rico’s only tropical rainforest on our Wild & Scenic Rainforest Nature Walk through El Yunque National Rainforest via the Angelito Trail that includes a swim in the Las Damas natural pool. A sunset version of the experience called the Twilight Night Nature Walk is also available. Discounts apply when booking kayaking tours and nature walks at the same time!
When you book a once-in-a-lifetime experience with us, we handle every detail to ensure a fun, safe, and memorable time in a surreal, bedazzling natural environment. Our adventures are ideal for solo travelers, couples, families, and groups of friends looking for an unforgettable glowing adventure near San Juan.

2) Experience Natural Rock Slides At Las Pailas
Las Pailas is a gorgeous swimming hole famous for its two smooth-rock waterfalls that form natural water slides! Yes, this is nature’s waterslide park! The main slide here is a 30-foot-long gently sloped slide.
The second of the two natural water slides is a slightly smaller slope located just a little further down the river. Of course, this is also a great spot if you’re not interested in a slippery ride. Simply take a dip in the natural pools beneath the falls or relax by the rolling river.
Good To Know: Las Pailas is located 20 minutes from the entrance of El Yunque within Luquillo. The drive involves some winding mountain roads. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the line of cars on the side of the road that serves as the unofficial parking lot.
3) Enjoy The White Sands Of Flamenco Beach
Located on a Caribbean island called Culebra, Flamenco Beach is a horseshoe-shaped pleasure beach famed for its sugar-like white, bluest-of-blue tides, and abundant marine life. This is one of the most amazing beaches for snorkeling and swimming in calm, inviting waters!
In addition to being beautiful, Flamenco is also a convenient beach that offers lifeguards, showers, bathrooms, and kiosks selling yummy Puerto Rican food. Of course, most people come here specifically to see the famed United States Navy tank left over from the occupation of Culebra.
Fun Fact: You may notice that something is missing here. As a sheltered beach, Flamenco is essentially free of waves. This is one of the reasons why families prefer this beach for swimming and snorkeling.
4) Visit The Salt Flats At Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge
Also known as Las Salinas, the Cabo Rojo NWR Salt Flats are as pink as cotton candy! After your arrival, you’ll take a short walk through a mangrove swamp to reach nearly 1,300 acres of pink flats sitting on top of natural lagoons.
Here are some attractions to hit within the refuge:
-
Explore three distinct hiking trails where you’ll see mangrove forests, subtropical dry forests, and beautiful pink hypersaline lagoons teeming with unique wildlife.
-
Stop by the Interpretive Center to discover the fascinating history of the salt flats and learn about Puerto Rico’s traditional salt mining practices.
-
Visit the Cabo Rojo NWR Salt Flats Unit Observation Tower for breathtaking panoramic views of the pink flats and surrounding natural beauty.
Fun Fact: The pink color of Las Salinas actually comes from an algae called Dunaliella salina that is bursting with the same carotenoids that give many vibrant fruits and vegetables their coloration. However, the hue of the flats can be red, pink, or a “cloudy” white color based on everything from bacteria levels to the weather.
5) Discover The Wonders Of El Portal De El Yunque – Your Gateway To Puerto Rico’s Rainforest Adventure
El Portal is the official visitor center of El Yunque National Forest. For many, it is the first stop on an adventure that brings tourists through 29,000 acres of unique terrain on the east side of Puerto Rico that includes mountains, clear rivers, and incredible scenery. El Yunque is home to one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet.
While at the visitor center, guests can view displays, talk with staff, meet the Puerto Rican parrots that live on the site, visit the gift shop, have lunch at the café, and watch a video narrated by Benicio Del Toro to prepare for a day of hiking and adventuring.
While you’re here, you can take “starter” hikes on two interpretive trails managed by the center:
-
Discover Trail – An easy, wheelchair-accessible trail starting from the second floor, perfect for a gentle walk and nature views.
-
The Science and Conservation Trail – A gravel loop trail that takes you through lush forest, great for learning about local plants and wildlife.
Good To Know: While many attractions within El Yunque are free and open to the public, several do require passes or advanced reservations. Visit the official website operated by the U.S. Forest Service to see which attractions require passes.
6) Visit An Old Town With Rich Culture In Bayamón
A popular spot for day trips, Bayamón is Puerto Rico’s second-largest city. Located a half hour from San Juan, Bayamón offers plenty to do on a day trip. Here’s a glance at some itinerary items:
-
Museo de Arte Francisco Oller – Housed inside a former city hall building, this museum showcases the works of painter Francisco Oller.
-
Museo De Arte De Bayamón – Featuring works by dozens of international and Puerto Rican artists, this world-class museum has a permanent collection that includes pieces by Dalí and Picasso. The grounds also house a spectacular sculpture garden.
-
Paseo Lineal – As the city’s central park, Paseo Lineal offers beautiful green spaces filled with scenic trails and pathways that are ideal for walking, biking, and skating. There’s also a playground.
-
Ron del Barrilito – Puerto Rico’s oldest rum distillery welcomes visitors on tours to see how this time-honored libation has been made in small batches since 1880.
Pro Tip: Renting a car is highly recommended for day trips from San Juan to Bayamón because public transportation options are limited.
7) See Amazing Views From A Mountain Town
Located roughly two hours from San Juan near the city of Ponce, the mountain town of Jayuya is a great place for day trips that let you observe both natural history and ancient history. Jayuya is a popular spot for day trips because it’s home to a 4,400-foot mountaintop called Cerro de Punta that is the highest peak in Puerto Rico.
On a clear day, you can see all the way to the coast. Yes, you’ll even be looking down over clouds from the top. Taíno artifacts are scattered around the terrain.
Pro Tip: Choose a clear day to visit Jayuya to make the long drive through curving, winding mountain roads a little easier. Make sure your rental car has four-wheel drive for the journey!
