Lunar Cycle

Lunar Cycle Welcome to our moon phase calendars, we have created this page to assist our guests with the all-important decision on what tour to take during the ever-changing cycle of the moon. Below you will find a calendar for each month of the year, by looking at the dates that you are planning to visit Puerto Rico you will be able to find what moon phase is going to be present during your visit. We offer two Night Kayaking Adventures the Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak Adventure which is offered Monday through Saturday from the New Moon to Half Full cycle. These nights are the darkest nights and offer the best conditions for viewing Pyrodinium Bahamense a species of Dinoflagellate or what is better known as the bioluminescent organism! Our second-night kayak adventure if offered Monday through Saturday from Half to Third Day Full as these nights hold the brightest light reflection to the area and the surface of the waters. Full Moon Eco Kayak Adventure: This kayak tour was developed as an alternative to the Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak Adventure as during the full moon cycle the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the organism. But that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, the second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of natures secrets that are normally overlooked on the darkest nights! So whatever the moon cycle, we can offer you an unforgettable experience into one of Puerto Rico’s most delicate ecosystem, Laguna Grande! Note that if you need any additional assistance or this page does not answer your questions feel free to contact our office Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. phases of the moon

Full Moon Kayak Adventure

Our Full Moon Kayak Adventure is the perfect nature adventure under a full moon, and if your stay in Puerto Rico happens to fall during the full moon stage you don’t have to miss out on our Night Kayaking Tours! Fajardo’s Bioluminescent Bay is best seen on the darkest nights of the lunar cycle, and if your stay in Puerto Rico happens to fall during the full moon stage you don’t have to miss out on our “Puerto Rico Night Kayaking Tour.” This tour was developed as an alternative to the Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Adventure during the full moon cycle as the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organism. But that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of natures secrets that are normally overlooked on the darkest nights! Whether you're a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a memorable adventure, the Full Moon Kayak Adventure promises an unforgettable night on the water. Book your Puerto Rico night kayaking tour today and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Puerto Rico. The activity will start with guest check in, storing of personal items, botanical insect repellent. At this point our tour will start, your group will be led across a small fisherman’s harbor to the entrance of Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve here they will enter a mystical channel that leads to a peaceful place where the mangroves create natural tunnels and the sights and sounds of wildlife surround you! After a 25 to 30 minute paddle through the channel, based on traffic and tidal currents your lead guide will be stopping once in the lagoon to give commentary on the following points of interest: • Mangrove forest and the different species.
 • Bird life that inhabits the area.
 • Aquatic marine life that uses the lagoon as an estuary.
 • Information on the Bioluminescence organism.
 • History on the lighthouse.
 • Insight on seven of eight ecosystems found in the area. At this point we will enter the lagoon called Laguna Grande, (large Lagoon) here we will paddle along the edge of the mangrove forest as we watch the stroke of each paddle light up a bioluminescent blue-green/white-green and encounter fish that look like shooting stars as they swim through the thick concentration of “Pyrodinium Bahamense” a species of “Dinoflagellate”, the bioluminescence is best seen on the darkest nights, so during the full moon phases the bioluminescence is less visible or not visible at all. This will lead the group to our break point where beautiful views of the Rainforest and the lighthouse of Fajardo accompany interpretation of the natural area and good conversations. Now we are about 1 hour into our tour, interpretation of the natural area has ended and our group is now in route to “Bird Island” to view many birds that roust here at night! Once quietly rounding the small island we will start our return to the departure site, this will take about 30 to 45 minutes. Tour duration is 1:45 – 2:00 hours in water with 45 minutes of pre-ride (kayak – 101) safety training, life vest sizing and fifteen minutes once back on shore for snacks, cold water and closing comments for a total of 3 hours.

What do people say about Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours?

I highly recommend PR BioBay Tours. We booked a tour during the full moon, and I appreciate that the company set our expectation of this being a Full Moon Adventure, no guarantee of bioluminescence. The thorough pre-kayaking safety briefing had us feeling safe and prepared. Entering the bay was magical in the twilight. Once inside the lagoon, we enjoyed an educational briefing on the science behind bioluminescence and learned about the species of fish and wildlife of the area. What a lovely evening! I followed recommendations of wearing long sleeves and pants; the mosquitos are no joke. Spray your neck and head as well. Also, realize that sargassum is thick on the shore in the ocean and in the mangroves on the way to and from the lagoon. It makes paddling a true adventure. lol

We loved the guided trip. The guides were very helpful especially when my young son was tired and upset. They helped him to calm down and to focus on the beautiful nature all around us. Thank you!

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Puerto Rico! The bioluminescent bay kayaking tour was an unforgettable experience. Seeing the water glow around our paddles was absolutely magical and seeing all the creatures at night was second to none. What really made the experience exceptional was the staff. They were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. They were very accommodating especially for someone such as myself who is handicap (missing 1 arm and 1 leg). Their enthusiasm and positive attitude made the trip even more enjoyable. We would absolutely do it again!

My wife and I did an 8pm guided kayak tour to laguna grande in mid June. This was our first experience with Caribbean sargassum. Be forewarned that the smell is intense. I'm actually thankful for this experience for raising my awareness of what a huge problem this is (Google it). The tour operator was well equipped and professional. The kayaking requires some arm strength and I enjoyed getting some exercise. Make sure that your kayak buddy is someone that you are capable of communicating with 😜. We lucked out and had a beautiful starry night (no moonlight). The y was totally mesmerizing and far exceeded my expectations. I did a night scuba dive in Utila years ago which was my first experience with bioluminescence. I was prepared to accept just the kayaking and clear night sky as a win given other tourist comments that the bioluminescence is hit or miss. Be prepared for Sargassum depending on when you visit.

Tour guide and equipment were the best for sure!!!! Kayaking was fun and beautiful IF you are planning on seeing more than static-energy looking glitter sparkles then you will be disappointed. It’s neat yes but pictures online show more colors

Our group of friends really enjoyed our tour! It was so fun and our guides were amazing. They talked with us about what to expect and communicated very well through out the tour. Since our tour was the earlier one, we kayaked and watched the sunset. It’s got to be dark to get the bright bioluminescent glow. It was such a cool experience. I highly recommend this company, they were educational, down to earth and did a great job! Thank you!

This was an exceptional experience for our family of seven. Although the moon was almost full and visibility of the bioluminescence was minimal, it was still educational and fun. The guides are knowledgeable and safety conscious. Would recommend this company to anyone looking for a legitimate, well organized tour.

I had a really great experience with my friends! We had an odd number of people, so I was paired with a guide named Justin. He knew a lot about the area and helped me find my friends in the dark! If I would do this kayaking trip again, I would definitely book with this company! Huge thanks to Justin and Gustavo!!

Luis Sanchez, our tour guide and his staff, were exceptional. The briefing and safety equipment were top notch. Especially liked the kayaks, with their very comfortable seats! The tour itself was about the right duration with the experience in the bioluminescent lagoon just amazing. Only negative, and it didn't involve our tour, was the fact that some other group had a power boat that had to be contaminating the waters with their exhaust, in such a delicate environment. Overall, excellent time spent!

Puerto Rico Bay Bio Tours was super professional, from signing up online to all of the details of the trip. They have great equipment, provide a thorough safety and general kayaking introduction, and are well organized in the water. Our main guide, Gustavo, was excellent, and, while on Laguna Grande, provided us with some very good biology about the microorganisms that are responsible for the bioluminescence while some of the other groups, fortunately far away, were hooting and hollering. The kayak through the mangrove tunnel was beautiful as was the lagoon. The only downside had nothing to do with Puerto Rico Bay Bio Tours and everything to do with the world we live in and that was the light pollution at the lagoon. Though we had a moonless night, the small but over lit development on the hill to the west of the lagoon really detracted from the bioluminescence. We had nothing more than a few sparkles in the water. On our return, Gustavo, to his credit, allowed us to enter the mangrove tunnel without lights for a while and the phenomenon was much better. But still not what you see in the brochures, so if you're expecting a major light show, you need to readjust your expectations. But a great company.

We did the full moon tour fully knowing that the bioluminescence might not be visible because of too much light. However, we did get to see some! The paddle across the bay was easy and going through the mangroves was peaceful and beautiful...one of the memories that we will keep with us for a long time. The quiet and serene lagoon was lovely. The only problem we had was paddling against the current on the way back...we were never in danger, but trying to maneuver with a bunch of inexperienced kayakers was a bit frustrating, so pack your patience;)

Detailed instructions ahead of time. Organized. We happened to be there at full moon time. At first was bummed as I wanted to see more bioluminescence but it was SUPER cool to kayak through the mangrove on a bright moon light! Husband and daughter still got to see a little bioluminescence. It was a great adventure and would totally recommend this! Really was a special memory of our trip to PR! ❤️This company was organized.

We ended up choosing this company because they had more availability on their website and we were booking a week out and not many availabilities elsewhere. We picked the 5:45pm time and this was great because we were the first group out. They provide bug spray that is safe for the water (don’t need to pre-apply). However, I maybe got one bug bite. They have a restroom at the place where you park slash kayaks drop in. No issue parking. Long sleeve shirt and shorts was great, wore water shoes, have to get into water to get in kayak. Was hard kayaking straight with two people. Lesson in the beginning was thorough and helpful. Part of the tour (lagoon and start back down the canal) they have everyone turn all of their lights off (they also have a remote) to help see the bioluminescence. We saw some but wasn’t crazy, maybe due to city lights and moon phase. Super cool and fun though. Didn’t learn a ton about the canal, they mainly gave some info about the bioluminescence once in the lagoon. It rained on us a few times and I wished I had a hat and sunglasses to see better when paddling over the first ocean wave area (paddling to the canal). They had 3 guides with us. Great experience! Grabbed dinner nearby afterwards. We went on a Monday night and some restaurants closed earlier than we thought. A little sore in the arms the next day. I have some experience kayaking and I’d say it was difficult tactically a little with the turns and two people trying to direct, but nothing crazy. Once in the canal water is still and easy to move through. They recommended everyone leave their belongings behind, however no one fell in and entry water is only knee deep. I think I could’ve brought phone in waterproof pouch and just had the rain to worry about. (Photos are from a girl in our group.)

super nice tour guides. even though there was a partial moon, we still saw the bioluminescence. 10/10 experience.

Author: Mary G | Date: 3/26/2026 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

It was amazing, and Javier was an awesome guide, I highly recommend it, depending on the tide will determine where you see the most bioluminescence. If you go during high tide it will mostly be in the bay but will be harder to paddle back in. If you go during low tide it will mostly be in with the Mangroves but will be an easier time headed in. Make sure to plan with the moon cycle!

This was a truly unique experience. We paddled through the mangroves to this giant lagoon. Bioluminescence is unique. The kayak trip is not for the faint of heart because you get wet and you’ve gotta do some pretty serious paddling. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The guides were knowledgeable, helpful and made the whole experience fun. Paddling to the lagoon at night was an adventure and the lagoon was incredible. The length of the tour was perfect and well worth the cost. We had a great group that was a perfect size with enough guides to space out for guidance as needed. Our group included all ages and previous experience wasn’t needed as the instructional session at the beginning was really thorough.

As a first-time kayaker, I was a little nervous about doing a bioluminescent bay tour at night, but it turned out to be one of the most exciting experiences I’ve had. The guides made everything easy and beginner-friendly, so I felt comfortable right away. Peaceful, surreal, and unforgettable. If you’re on the fence, go for it. It’s pure magic.

We truly had a blast on this tour with our two teenagers. The guides are great and the whole experience was a lot of fun. It's not that hard to navigate the narrow channel and the guides are very helpful. The bioluminescence in the bay isn't crazy bright, don't believe the pics on the internet BUT it's 100% worth seeing and being in the dark bay with the bright stars is pretty incredible. I'd do it again!

We were so fortunate to not only have fabulous weather, but also a new moon and an excellent staff. They had a great training presentation and once on the water we knew how to handle ourselves. The information that was presented once on the lagoon was thorough without being overdone. Our favorite part was paddling along the narrow mangrove lined channels with barely any light penetrating through the dense canopy.

The instructor made us feel very comfortable about getting in the kayak. I didn’t realize I would be up to my waist getting in the kayak, hence no pictures. The paddle was ok. The fellow kayaks were terrible constantly sideways in the narrowish channel to get to the lagoon. Once in the lagoon the bioluminescence was amazing. It somewhat made it worth it watching the ridiculousness of other paddlers. Not the tour companies fault but added a ton of time to the trip. Also Lille bugs biting on the way. Consider bug spray

A solid company. They have quality gear. Their priority is safety and they are so good at it you don’t notice you are being cared for.We liked the sunset trip, the paddle through the mangrove at sunset was so beautiful that playing with the bioluminescence plankton seemed like an additional perk.First time kayakers can do the trip but it would be appreciated if parents could stop their children from ramming the other guest kayaks

When planning a trip to Laguna Grande to see the bioluminescence, we were presented with, dare I say, too many options of companies to choose. All promised similar experiences so it was incredibly difficult to choose. I am incredibly please to say THIS is the one you want. This was absolutely the perfect version of this experience. A relatively small group, very personable and knowledgeable guides. Plus when we reached the bay it felt like we were given more freedom to roam around a little in our kayaks compared to the other groups we saw. It felt like this was the trip for those who were a little more experienced with tours like this and didn't need a "hand holding" experience. Thank you for an amazing and unforgettable experience!

We just returned from our Biobay Boat tour ! First , let me say this “family” is incredible ! From the second you walk into the waiting area you are greeted with exceptional people . They are fun , so knowledgeable about the lagoon , and do EVERYTHING to make your experience perfect . We saw the Iguana condos ( lol) glow in the dark scorpions , and the bioluminescence was one of the most amazing experiences of my life . We learned so much about the area, history and had lots of laughs along the way. This experience seemed way better than the kayaks if you want to really learn about the ecosystem and the bay . We took the 8:15 tour and it was dark enough to really appreciate everything! Thanks for letting us join you in your “office ! “

My family went on a moonlit tour with Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours, and it was a wonderful experience! The tour guides and manager were very professional and thorough with the safety review of kayaking at night in the channel. It was a gorgeous night, the full moon was glowing on the water, and even though it was off-season for bioluminescent viewing, the guide found dark enough spots for us to view some! I would do this tour again without hesitation.

I highly recommend this company for a bioluminescence tour in Fajardo. The staff/guides are professional, friendly, welcoming, informative, knowledgeable, and accomodating. The tour is incredible! Even if the bioluminescence is low/not at ideal times, the experience is magical and the guides take the time to find the best location within the lagoon to see the bioluminescence. Kayaking through the mangroves to reach the lagoon was an experience in itself. The 3 hour period starts with a well presented introduction about the tour (operations, what to expect, what you need to do, and an intro into kayaking). The company provides DEET free bug spray and life jackets with a whistle. Guides, kayaks, and participants are identificable by a particular arrangement and color of low lights.Be prepared to get at least the lower half of your body submerged in water. You must enter approximately waist deep water to get in and out of the 2-person kayak. Recommend bringing a change of shorts/pants. Water and snacks are provided at the end.

What a great experience. The tour guides for our tour had great attitudes, had a ton of knowledge of the area, were funny. I'm glad I read the material before to set my expectation, this is not an avatar movie. The bioluminesence is only seen when the water is disturbed and only lasts a second or two after agitating the water. Still it was an incredible experience absolutely well worth the time energy and cost. (Note the picture of the yellow and green is the boats in front of us)

Kayaking through a dark lagoon canal with manatees is not for the weak, especially if it's your first time experience. We had a hard time navigating through the dark canal, but the tour guides assisted us during the entire tour. Great family experience in PR. The team was professional and fun starting with a safety briefing, "kayaking 101", and some humor. While there wasn't any bioluminescence it was still a very enjoyable tour through the mangrove channel and into the bay. We appreciated that the outfit contacted us in advance to let us know that the guides had observed low/little bioluminescence to give us the opportunity to proceed with an eco focused tour or cancel. We are very happy we chose to do the tour. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, the level of bioluminescence is so different from my past experience in Laguna Grande, but that is not the tour company's fault. Had I known it was barely there, I wouldn't have booked the trip. But overall, the tour was good. We had a lot of inexperienced kayakers, which was frustrating. Also, having while lights on the back of the kayak was not optimal. I do understand that with so many tour companies, they are trying to differentiate from other tour companies' kayakers. So basically, it was a nice night paddle for me. I really hope that the algae comes back but I am afraid that this is the new normal. What was once bright blue sparkles, was now mild silver shimmer when agitating the water.

The guides were friendly and informative, and the company communicated ahead of time that the bioluminescence would be limited due to sargassum, giving us the option to cancel. We chose to go anyway and are glad we did. The 6pm trip was a great choice - it gave us beautiful views of the mangroves and sunset on the way out, and we still got to experience a bit of the glowing water on the return. We went on a kayak adventure from 8-11pm. The kayaking was amazing. They told us we may not see the bioluminescence because the Sargassum had invaded the lagoon and the luminescent creatures had died off because of anoxic conditions. We learned that all of the tour companies had gone in and cleaned the sargassum out of the lagoon to try to help the conditions. We got to see the bioluminescence and it was wonderful. The kayak ride out there was pretty and not too long. We went over labor day weekend in september and saw the bioluminescence! We loved getting to kayak there in the light and come back in the dark. I think we did the first time frame? But can't fully remember. Either way, great experience. Also, the Fajardo Bay in general where the tour starts was such a pretty place to see as well! There were lots of food trucks around to grab a bite to eat before the tour.

This was a fun outing for our family and the bioluminescence was so pretty! We were novices who had only done kayaking a couple of times before and it was definitely a challenge to keep up at times. The guides were really engaging. Wear lots of bug spray.
