2) Visit Juan Diego Falls
Juan Diego Falls offers refreshing natural beauty just an hour from San Juan, tucked away in El Yunque National Forest. While a popular attraction for people visiting El Yunque, Juan Diego is often called a “secret” waterfall because it’s tucked away.
From the road, there’s a short path to a natural pool along Juan Diego Creek with a beautiful 15-foot waterfall. Many visitors head into the pool or stand under the waterfall. Bring water shoes to jump into the water!
How To Get There: Drive to kilometer marker 10 on Highway 191 and look for the Quebrada Juan Diego sign.
3) Spend Time At The El Portal Visitor Center
As the main visitor center of El Yunque National Forest, El Portal is the perfect starting point for learning everything you need to know about this jewel of the National Forest System.
In addition to offering an introduction to the history and rules of the park, the center also offers resources for planning a day trip to a trail or attraction within El Yunque.
Here’s a look at things to do during your visit:
-
Speak with national forest system staff members and rangers about trail safety and learn about trail closures impacting your plans.
-
Explore interactive exhibits showcasing the ecosystems and wildlife in the trails that surround you.
-
Explore two interpretative trails called the Discovery Trail (paved) and Science and Conservation Trail (gravel) that offer curated introductions to the rainforest terrain of the park for first-time visitors.
-
Enjoy an exhibit covering the endangered Puerto Rican parrot.
-
Have lunch or a snack at the restaurant inside the visitor center.
-
Pick up some gifts at the center’s official gift shop.
Good To Know: El Portal Visitor Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. While visitor reservations are not needed, there is an entrance fee of $8 per person for all visitors over age 16.
4) Enjoy Panoramic Views At Yokahu Tower
Yokahú Tower is an observation tower that offers sweeping views over El Yunque. Built in 1963, the tower sits at an elevation of 1,575 feet. While the views are spectacular on clear days, the elevation here does mean that clouds sometimes interfere with what you can see.
There is a wide, comfortable staircase that allows visitors to easily climb to the top of the 69-foot-tall tower to soak in once-in-a-lifetime views of the park.
Pro Tip: With high humidity and unpredictable weather at this site, do consider wearing hiking boots and packing a rain jacket to ensure you’re comfortable in slippery conditions. Always check local weather reports before embarking!
5) Enjoy Some More Natural Pools And Falls Inside El Yunque Rainforest
If you love to splash and swim, there are actually several must-visit spots aside from the aforementioned Juan Diego Falls. In fact, you can be submerged in the coolest, clearest water you’ve ever felt on your skin in less than an hour after leaving your hotel room in San Juan.
Here’s a look at the top spots:
-
La Coca Falls – Located at an elevation of 1,476 feet above sea level, La Coca Falls features an 85-foot drop onto a massive rock formation. It’s a great spot for a photo opportunity. Additionally, adventurers looking for a more rugged hiking experience can select the La Coca Trail just beyond the falls.
-
La Mina Falls – Visiting the biggest falls within the park is one of the top things to do in El Yunque. The La Mina Falls are accessible via the La Mina Trail that brings hikers through challenging terrain with stairs and muddy conditions. Explorers are rewarded by swimming in a refreshing natural pool with average temperatures around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Baño Grande – Baño Grande is a historic pool within the La Mina Recreation Area within El Yunque. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 using stone and concrete, Baño Grande has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2017. While swimming is no longer permitted, the well-maintained pool is open to the public as a scenic area.
Good To Know: Many of the rugged hiking trails and natural pools within this national forest are notorious for closures due to weather conditions or work being done by forest service workers. Always confirm that attractions are open to avoid disappointment before embarking. One of the benefits of using a guided tour is that local agencies stay updated on closures.
