With so much to see and do, first-time visitors might feel overwhelmed choosing where to start. This guide to things to do in El Yunque National Forest covers all the must-do activities during your visit.

1) Take A Guided El Yunque Rainforest Tour

There’s no need to try to map your own route! Simply join an experienced local guide on a nature walk through El Yunque via Angelito Trail. During this morning walking excursion through some of the most scenic portions of the park, you’ll learn about the diverse species that live within the forest’s eight distinct ecosystems. Your guide will also share facts about the local history and culture. The tour ends with a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear Las Damas natural pool!

2) Visit Juan Diego Falls

Juan Diego Falls offers refreshing natural beauty just an hour from San Juan, tucked away in El Yunque National Forest. While a popular attraction for people visiting El Yunque, Juan Diego is often called a “secret” waterfall because it’s tucked away.

From the road, there’s a short path to a natural pool along Juan Diego Creek with a beautiful 15-foot waterfall. Many visitors head into the pool or stand under the waterfall. Bring water shoes to jump into the water!

How To Get There: Drive to kilometer marker 10 on Highway 191 and look for the Quebrada Juan Diego sign.

3) Spend Time At The El Portal Visitor Center

As the main visitor center of El Yunque National Forest, El Portal is the perfect starting point for learning everything you need to know about this jewel of the National Forest System.

In addition to offering an introduction to the history and rules of the park, the center also offers resources for planning a day trip to a trail or attraction within El Yunque.

Here’s a look at things to do during your visit:

  • Speak with national forest system staff members and rangers about trail safety and learn about trail closures impacting your plans.

  • Explore interactive exhibits showcasing the ecosystems and wildlife in the trails that surround you.

  • Explore two interpretative trails called the Discovery Trail (paved) and Science and Conservation Trail (gravel) that offer curated introductions to the rainforest terrain of the park for first-time visitors.

  • Enjoy an exhibit covering the endangered Puerto Rican parrot.

  • Have lunch or a snack at the restaurant inside the visitor center.

  • Pick up some gifts at the center’s official gift shop.

Good To Know: El Portal Visitor Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. While visitor reservations are not needed, there is an entrance fee of $8 per person for all visitors over age 16.

4) Enjoy Panoramic Views At Yokahu Tower

Yokahú Tower is an observation tower that offers sweeping views over El Yunque. Built in 1963, the tower sits at an elevation of 1,575 feet. While the views are spectacular on clear days, the elevation here does mean that clouds sometimes interfere with what you can see.

There is a wide, comfortable staircase that allows visitors to easily climb to the top of the 69-foot-tall tower to soak in once-in-a-lifetime views of the park.

Pro Tip: With high humidity and unpredictable weather at this site, do consider wearing hiking boots and packing a rain jacket to ensure you’re comfortable in slippery conditions. Always check local weather reports before embarking!

5) Enjoy Some More Natural Pools And Falls Inside El Yunque Rainforest

If you love to splash and swim, there are actually several must-visit spots aside from the aforementioned Juan Diego Falls. In fact, you can be submerged in the coolest, clearest water you’ve ever felt on your skin in less than an hour after leaving your hotel room in San Juan.

Here’s a look at the top spots:

  • La Coca Falls – Located at an elevation of 1,476 feet above sea level, La Coca Falls features an 85-foot drop onto a massive rock formation. It’s a great spot for a photo opportunity. Additionally, adventurers looking for a more rugged hiking experience can select the La Coca Trail just beyond the falls.

  • La Mina Falls – Visiting the biggest falls within the park is one of the top things to do in El Yunque. The La Mina Falls are accessible via the La Mina Trail that brings hikers through challenging terrain with stairs and muddy conditions. Explorers are rewarded by swimming in a refreshing natural pool with average temperatures around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Baño Grande – Baño Grande is a historic pool within the La Mina Recreation Area within El Yunque. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 using stone and concrete, Baño Grande has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2017. While swimming is no longer permitted, the well-maintained pool is open to the public as a scenic area.

Good To Know: Many of the rugged hiking trails and natural pools within this national forest are notorious for closures due to weather conditions or work being done by forest service workers. Always confirm that attractions are open to avoid disappointment before embarking. One of the benefits of using a guided tour is that local agencies stay updated on closures.

Full Moon Kayak Adventure

Our Full Moon Kayak Adventure is the perfect nature adventure under a full moon, and if your stay in Puerto Rico happens to fall during the full moon stage you don’t have to miss out on our Night Kayaking Tours!

Fajardo’s Bioluminescent Bay is best seen on the darkest nights of the lunar cycle, and if your stay in Puerto Rico happens to fall during the full moon stage you don’t have to miss out on our “Puerto Rico Night Kayaking Tour.”

This tour was developed as an alternative to the Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Adventure during the full moon cycle as the reflection of the moonlight on the surface of the lagoon makes it difficult to see the bioluminescent organism. But that same moonlight exposes mangrove forests, eight ecosystems, bird life, second oldest lighthouse in Puerto Rico, iguanas and much more of natures secrets that are normally overlooked on the darkest nights!

Whether you're a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a memorable adventure, the Full Moon Kayak Adventure promises an unforgettable night on the water. Book your Puerto Rico night kayaking tour today and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Puerto Rico.

The activity will start with guest check in, storing of personal items, botanical insect repellent.

At this point our tour will start, your group will be led across a small fisherman’s harbor to the entrance of Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve here they will enter a mystical channel that leads to a peaceful place where the mangroves create natural tunnels and the sights and sounds of wildlife surround you! After a 25 to 30 minute paddle through the channel, based on traffic and tidal currents your lead guide will be stopping once in the lagoon to give commentary on the following points of interest:

• Mangrove forest and the different species.

• Bird life that inhabits the area.

• Aquatic marine life that uses the lagoon as an estuary.

• Information on the Bioluminescence organism.

• History on the lighthouse.

• Insight on seven of eight ecosystems found in the area.

At this point we will enter the lagoon called Laguna Grande, (large Lagoon) here we will paddle along the edge of the mangrove forest as we watch the stroke of each paddle light up a bioluminescent blue-green/white-green and encounter fish that look like shooting stars as they swim through the thick concentration of “Pyrodinium Bahamense” a species of “Dinoflagellate”, the bioluminescence is best seen on the darkest nights, so during the full moon phases the bioluminescence is less visible or not visible at all.

This will lead the group to our break point where beautiful views of the Rainforest and the lighthouse of Fajardo accompany interpretation of the natural area and good conversations. Now we are about 1 hour into our tour, interpretation of the natural area has ended and our group is now in route to “Bird Island” to view many birds that roust here at night! Once quietly rounding the small island we will start our return to the departure site, this will take about 30 to 45 minutes.

Tour duration is 1:45 – 2:00 hours in water with 45 minutes of pre-ride (kayak – 101) safety training, life vest sizing and fifteen minutes once back on shore for snacks, cold water and closing comments for a total of 3 hours.
